This module uses an attenu-inverter circuit for each of the two X and Y axis. You can patch an lfo, vco, etc. and use the joytick to FM an expternal VCO for example. When you use only the output on the Mini FM Joystick there is an internal 6.9v reference voltage so that you can voltage control your external modules. For example you can control a VCF module's cutoff parameter using the Mini FM's joystick.

There is also a 6.9v gate output when you push the joystick. The push button outputs an internal gate voltage when nothing is connected to the top input, very useful for triggering envelopes and such. When users plug in something to the input it simply acts as a passive thru switch. Users can push the joystick to pass the signal.
