Pattern selection knob selects one of 16 patterns from current bank. There are 4 pattern banks, two banks are 8-step, two banks are 16-step long (selectable by internal jumper). P-060 switches (2 switches of 6) can be used for switching banks from top panel.
First pattern is always 1-2-3-4 sequence, last two patterns are always random sequence with step repetition and without step repetition. In random modes all four step LEDs glows at half brightness showing random mode is currently selected.
Step 1 is first step in all patterns (except random) and in most patterns is played more often so it can be preferably used as pattern root note (highlited by circle). In random modes step 1 is played more often too (probability of 40%, steps 2,3,4 are 20%). Module autoresets itself after about 16 missing clocks or stays at last step forever and continues from current position (selectable by internal jumper).
So S-143 can make 8-step or 16-step long patterns (or random patterns) using 4 notes, great for creating bass lines. Don´t forget you can set two or three steps to same note creating much more pattern variations.
It can be used as regular clock divider too (/2 or /4 if pattern 1 is selected) or it can create non-regular rhythm patterns if an another pattern is selected.
For regular division-by-2 set pattern 1, knobs 1&3 to max, knobs 2&4 to min. Division-by-4: knob 1 to max, knobs 2&3&4 to min.
As example of creating non-regular rythm select 8-beat/bank-1/pattern-5, knob 1 to max, other knobs to min (so only step 1 creates out gate): you´ll get rhythm pattern 1,1,0,1,0,1,0,0
