10 HP interactive gate sequence generator and source of randomness
Evolving Patterns by Nocturnis Audio is a module that takes a clock signal as input and generates a gate sequence as the output, with varying probabilities and variations in gate length. The output is based on internal random number streams in shift registers with 1-32 steps. As the sequence repeats, there is a random probability for a change to occur for each step, generating an output that can stay fixed and repeat, be completely random, or evolve slowly over time.
The parameters are set by two knobs and four sliders, each with CV control. The sliders are lit from behind to make it easier to understand how the sequence is generated. The module is designed to be a fun interactive experience suitable for live improvisation, as well as being usable in generative patches and for a number of utility functions.
In addition to the gate signal output, there is also a stepped random output in the 0..5V range, also generated through the same random number streams. This can be used for example for modulation similar to a Sample and Hold, fed through a pitch quantizer for generation of melodies, or just as a source of random numbers. The module can be used in many patches instead of a Turing Machine or similar shift-register based module.
Additional features include a ratchet mode for a more glitchy gate sequence output, and Load/Save functionality to help quickly get back to a known good sequence. While the module is primarily designed to be driven by an external clock signal, there is also an internal clock generation feature, increasing its flexibility if it doesn't have to be synchronized with the rest of the patch.
