Travis was one of the 36 people who perished in the Ghost Ship fire last December. I made music with Travis for 10 years, we played in bands together, we recorded, and I watched him evolve from the most talented vocalist I'd ever worked with into also being one of the most inspiring synthesists. He was my best friend and his loss is felt every day.

This is the final patch that he made with his modular. I've kept it as-is for now, eventually I will start making my own patches, he was always trying to show me how and now I will learn myself.

You can listen to it here:

I would like to change this setup

-- Nanshe

Why? What are you missing?

wave folders are usually reasonably priced- Intellijel uFold works for me, but you might want to check the new Tiptop one besides.

I'm about half way saved up for this system: ModularGrid Rack

The idea is to have a self-contained performance system that can range from booty shaking music to rhythmic noice. I figure between the Metropolis, Trigger Riot, and the uStep, I'm good for sequencing and modulation sources, not counting the LFOs from the Atlantis and the Tidal Wave.

I plan on doing this in two waves. The upper 3u (main synth voice and sequencer plus effects) will be first. Then the bottom 3u (drum sequencer + voices, Tidal Wave - mostly for envelope/filter/etc, but also as a secondary voice, and a mixer) will come toward the end of the year.

It's all pretty straight forward, but I can't help shake the feeling I'm missing something.

Thanks for any input.

Thanks for your answers, guys! The Morpheus Filter looks great, very impressive ! Optomix & Math are already on my shopping list but I do not know when to take them. Maybe instead of Batumi, this would be the time to test Math? Now beside modulation, do you think it is interesting to build some waveshaping modules at this point ?

ModularGrid Rack

Already have several other more conventional synths, so with this rack, I wanted to try to fit as many functionalities I don't currently have (Granular, Additive, General Generative Capabilities, Low Pass Gates, Maybe Some Percussion?, ETC...) into one Makenoise skiff.

If you think there's anything key missing, I'd love to hear.

Cheers!

maybe a Maths (or Function) to expand your modulation possibilities - or a Peg, which can also do time-sync'd movement. nice sound your getting w such a compact setup! maybe time to experiment with another oscillator flavor as well. a doepfer sample & hold, inexpensive - great between modulator & FM carrier. optomix for LPG flavors & making your modulation more interesting.

Great system! - can't go wrong with the classic Wiard/Malekko- and results sounds very good - should post some new music too. Wow - and a SyncGen IIs as well - think so many people go for the Expert Sleepers, but I've found it so reliable.

I want to build this in hopes of one day doing some things my pedals can't do, especially with s/h, filters, and random clocks. Also built for the Power Lunch, so it's not a bad starting point.

ModularGrid Rack

I wanted to build a very flexible and portable synthesizer on the smallest budget possible. I'm choosing Eurorack over a pre-built synth because I would ultimately like to expand to a larger system, plus I'm in a bit of a rut where I'm finding the standard keyboard layout limiting (my brain is stuck on certain patterns) so I figure some unorthodox control would do me good.

Basically, I tried to give myself as many options as possible under $1000. I was planning on picking up a Synthrotek Power Lunch for the case. I haven't started collecting any modules, so I'm looking for any recommendations or anti-recommendations. This is an incredibly revised draft with a bit of research, but any guidance would be appreciated.

ModularGrid Rack

I had two excellent transactions with @Weepwow. He is a trusted buyer and seller.

Had recent excellent Transactions with @Worwell and @Gonner, very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. Thanks!

I had nice transactions with @lumotint and @worwell recently!

@saywordsahn is an excellent seller. He sold me a Shapeshifter and very helpfully updated the firmware for me prior to shipping.

my modular:

ModularGrid Rack

I wanted an analog machine, here it is. I have a SEM on the side too.
...if I had money I would change modules just to keep it fresh but for now this has to do!

I have some change in mind but would keep the same functionality.

an alternative idea for another case would be to get mostly digital modules, but hey I don't have another 10 grand :)
but that would interest me as well.

Love the idea of the three Schippmann in one rig - wow. I'm wondering what you have planned for the the bottom row. As I move towards 2419hp of rig populated with 188 modules I'm not so much interested in making music as discovering sound emerging out of randomness. The idea that I could go years patching stuff and not feel like I've duplicated my previous efforts is like the linear trip into reading a wide variety of subjects where you never have to read the same author twice but you keep learning about the infinity of human thought.

Keep around:
* White Whale to swap with Ansible
* Shades to swap with Meadowphysics
* LoFiJunkie to swap with Chronoblob
* O'Tool+ to swap with Cold Mac

Buy:
* Submodular 208 case?
* Malekko Power Supply?

Maybe:
* Lxd could be interesting to swap with Nano Rand.
* Make Noise Contour could swap with Shades.
* Morphagene or 4ms Sampler to swap with DLD/Erbe Verb?
* Arpitecht or Tuesday could be interesting to swap with Quadra.
* Frap Tools Sapel and Instruo Harmonaig are both interesting and 18hp but I probably won't get either.
* Tiptop Quantizer or Folder?
* Voltage Block or Praga?

I love your music,
I would be tempted by a 4ms dld delay or Morpheus Morphing Z-Plane Filter.

Hi Dom,
I'm a noob myself but I think,

Ladik do a cv to gate module super cheap M-211 MIDI to gate.

Also I think an envelope and a multiple might be useful for the filter.

Hi,

I'm all new and could do with some advice please.
I want to just make bass sounds.
I've purchased tiptop bd 808 bass drum, morhheus z plane, erica black stero mixer v2 with tip top happy ending kit.
I think I will need a midi to cv to trigger the 808.
I will purchase an oscillator at a later date.
I would like to no if there is anything else that is essential,or that I need to get sound out.
If anyone could help would be great

Hi truly inspirational.
Thx

You're welcome. Hope it helped.

Thread: 3rd Options

$3500 Tax Incl. (w.out chorno blob, N/A?)

$2297 Tax Incl (w.out maths, clouds, chrono, mult, mix).

  • Maybe could find used atlantis for like ~ $750 (= $327 off above prices overall)

1st less savings on atlantis used ~$3173 (actually bit less via savings on tax )

2nd less savings on on atlantis used ~$1970 (actually bit less via savings on tax )

$2679.5 Tax Incl.

$1704 Tax Incl. (without maths or clouds )

~ $1100 TAX IN on discount w. no additional modules

$2790 CAD + TAX without case from MOOG
=~ $3200 :(

Wicked, thank you!

Any news on this company or module? Their website doesn't work, and it's nigh impossible to find anything else on them.

Highly recommended seller: @ bj_gzp ! Communication, shipping, packing, everything was excellent!

I forgot to mention that the DIY solution is ok to me if no SMD/Surface mount soldering is present.

Here is a video with this current setup as of April 4, 2017

Thanks to @robocoder! Sold a perfect working WMD SSM. Shipping from Japan needed just 4 days to Austria! Package was super-well packed!

Truly an essential part of any system. 10/10 would fry again.

Hi. What do you think is missing?
Thanks for help!!

Just received Braids from @computersynths and couldn't be happier. Is immaculate, super fast shipping and a great price! Highly recommended!

Hi guys !

I would like to change this setup but I have no ideas on what to buy next, so many choices... The main purpose is to make experimental/generative/ambient/indus/noise.
I was in a shop last week and the seller advised me to take a Batumi and maybe a second filter (multimode).

Just bought an Intellijel double ADSR from @robocoder and had an extremely pleasant transaction. Highly recommended.

Part of a larger system

Thank you to @tFunk ! Good service and fast transaction - module in perfect shape.

Looking for some input. In short, I have Moog Mother x 2, Korg MS-20Mini and Phenol. Looking to expand into a 6u setup to close the loop. Also have Analog Keys that I'll incorporate for CV/Gate tracks. Thinking about a BS Pro, primarily for TRIG outs to use as a clocking device, but clearly the additional 2 channels of CV/Gates could be handy. Plan to sequence heavily from DAW through MIDI input on YARNS.

Music Style: Globally quite industrial (dance, rock, metal), but love doing ambient as well. Incorporate lots of guitar and bass into the work.

So, here's what I'm looking at right now. Already ordered the following:

Yarns, Braids, Peaks, Veils, Tonestar 2600, ALM S.B.G. (Malekko device shown in place of), Maths, Cinnamon, and Buffered Mult.

Looking to add the following: Shapeshifter OR E350 and Warps.

Is there anything glaringly missing, or suggestions? Processing (Reverb, Effects, etc...) will be pedals and vsts, though not opposed to the idea of some modules for processing audio.

I can use the filters in Mothers and 2600, as well as the Envelopes, LFOs, and VCAs (though there are obvi limitations as they;re normalled). Not sure I need more of these components.

Anyhow. Advice/comments appreciated.

I can't seem to copy/paste my rack jpg here.

Thank you @soundray ! Great communication and easy seller to work with :)

Thread: a few q's

hi all,

like others here i went deep down the rabbit hole recently and i'm totally enthralled and in a delirium like state, modular synths are everything i was looking for a looooong time, i just didn't know it had a name! now that i do... its all i know.

here is a picture of my rack, i still don't know many things, and probably have chosen a few things on it just to be with the cool kids so please advise.

i am an artist/ filmmaker & i want to build a synth that fits some criteria:

  • make soundscapes / sound design for my short films
  • can any modules do foley sounds?
  • play live music for performances
  • should be fun
  • video synthesis / VJ
  • should be somewhat portable - the erica synths travel case looks ideal, is pretty co$$$tly tho
  • i can solder/diy myself, and would prefer this
  • want some weird, unusual, esoteric modules
  • am highly interested in euclidean rhythms and neo-riemannian theory, and the "tonnetz" and such, so mosdef i want the "ornament and crime", dunno how to add it? doesn't come up in module search?
  • should i just go all out with erica synths black series?
  • very interested in highly technical and mathematical/musical concepts and modules that allow me to map highly geometric, sparse, conceptual compositions to sounds
  • have a technical background and wanna make a deep dive into synthesis
  • looking for suggestions for musicians, theorists, writers, performers, youtubers, etc
  • i know my rack is totally a grab-bag and ridiculous as of now

could you folks please take a look and throw any suggestions my way

ps: also, this website is quite modular itself innit, its cool. especially the rack builder. so fun.

I had a good experience with @mexicane and @ismtenrom.

nice transaction with @batudal on his qmi2 vermona module. Thanks!

I purchased an E350 Morphing Terrarium from @clarinet and it all went super smooth. Very responsive and quick turnaround. Thanks!

is assisted off-rack by:

•Korg SQ-1
•MFB Microzwerg
•Standuino (Bastl) Microgranny v1
•Strymon El Capistan

and is in a current state of "merged from two smaller racks."

possible sites of change are:

•smaller/more robust logic section
•larger VCA (bottom row is cramped for good and bad reasons)
•something more satisfying than the PicoEG

Patch

I'm new to modular but I wanted to start getting into it. I'm looking to build a good ambient synth for softer, lighter textures (as opposed to darker, gnarly textures) and something that's based around Mutable's Clouds synth module. I could see myself using Cloud's sampling/granulation features frequently.

I decided to take NickT's example in this thread (Nano Rand, Make Noise Telharmonic, and Mutable Clouds) and use it as the basis of the synth. The video he included perfectly captures the sound I want. I also decided to add two Erica Pico Drum modules to add beats underneath, along with a Pico Trigger, two Pico DSPs, and a Pico Mixer. The signal path would be, with each being independent of the other:

Nano Rand -> Telharmonic -> Clouds -> DSP #1 -> Mixer
Trigger -> Both drums -> Stacked into DSP #2 -> Mixer

I wanted to verify that the signal paths are workable and correct. I don't fully understand how patching the synth part would work, so I left that section blank, but the drum parts seem to make sense to me. Any suggestions on good synth modules other than the Telharmonic would also be appreciated.

Had a wonderful transaction with @signalsforstarships. Purchased a BD9 from him and he was super friendly. I got it in the mail immediately! 10/10 would buy from again!
