Hi Klngvrhltnss and Lugia,

Interesting tread! How to place something in stereo right or left field is kind of half-way understood however getting something beautifully placed in the middle, so it sounds perfectly well in the stereo sweet spot is getting less clear to me. Then, even more unclear to me is, how to put for example one instrument in the front-middle of stereo and another instrument in the back-middle of the stereo field; I have no idea. With that I mean that you really can hear that one instrument is "closer" to you while the other instruments seems to be more far away from you (i.e. away from the listener). Any information on that would be very welcome. Preferable within Eurorack but if that's getting too difficult then out of the Eurorack is fine too.

Thank you very much in advance and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Klngvrhltnss,

Thanks a lot for the information and the hint, I will give that a try with my SumDif module :-)

I read the link you provide, not all yet, however one question arises... how to take a voice more into the front of the stereo view and how to put for example another (less important sound perhaps) to the back of the stage?

Sorry, that I can't help you with your question. Thank you very much and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Rassell,

Wow, that's something nice there man! You got a lot of surprise sounds in there that I really like :-)

Oh, and then your video with a beautiful view of your modular setup and seeing you here at work, that's so great and so enjoyable to watch! I like the "bird view" moments in the video as well, nice touch :-)

If you would tell me you are in real J.M. Jarre or Vangelis (your music sounds a bit too modern for Vangelis, so I would go for J.M. Jarre) and you are just using here a nickname, then I would believe you! :-) This is serious good stuff and very entertaining!

You must be nuts to start from scratch and break down this setup, it's so nice! It hurts me that you tell us this ;-)

Now I finally got a good beginning of this weekend (thanks to you!), thank you very much for sharing this and kind regards, Garfield Modular.

P.S.: And I am going to click on the play button again, there is so much to discover here in this track of yours!

Hi Defragmenteur,

You got some interesting sounds there :-) I am especially impressed by those almost kind of percussion sounds that kind of tick-tack through it, sounds very intriguing!

Thank you very much for sharing this and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Klngvrhltnss,

I have difficulties to pronounce your name ;-)

To be honest, I don't get your point here. I am most probably not understanding what you try to say: How can a mono-filter like the Doepfer A-124 Wasp filter inverts your stereo image. I am having difficulties to understand that...

Kind regards, Garfield Modular.

Hi Mowse,

Yes, I totally agree here with Zuggamasta, it's such a pleasure to listen to your jams :-) Nicely done, yet again! :-)

What effect are you using on that mean lead voice? That sounds quite interesting! Is that "just" a reverb or something else?

Great bleep bloop :-) Kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Sacguy71,

I know it's not a Eurorack module but I love the pedal from Source Audio, it's called the Ventris Dual Reverb, it has a beautiful and good quality sound. It can provide you those nice spacey sounds you were asking for. Since you are into guitar "business" as well, you might want to consider a pedal like the Ventris Dual Reverb.

Kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Frederick,

You are welcome and no problem. That's why this forum is here, to check in case of doubt or in case of a question and that's what you did, nothing wrong with that :-)

Enjoy modular and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Sacguy71,

Wow, you got yourself by now a nice setup, but not all is visible in this video, is it? Can't wait for your new studio setup :-)

I see you got a Batumi as well, are you happy with it? I am having it on my wish list.

Have fun and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Frederick,

I got them both, the Erica Synths - 2 HP black blind panel and the 3 HP black blind panel. This looks to me like the 2 HP black blind panel since the holes are a bit shifted to the left. With the 3 HP blind panel the holes are quite exactly in the middle.

Kind regards, Garfield Modular.

Hi Funbun,

Wow that's a serious large album! :-) With some very interesting music. I like The Waves Of Life a lot and Cottondale Counterpoint sounds very interesting too.

By the way, I love the album cover art work by Krystal Penny, that's a great cover!

I will continue listening at your album, thank you very much for sharing this and kind regards, Garfield.

You got some fantastic sounds in this jam, beautiful and disturbing nice at the same time :-)

Ha, ha, I like the video effects you have been adding here, lot's of fun there too!

Hi Sacguy71,

Yeah would be lovely to meet you at the Superbooth and showing me your MDLR setup :-)

How is your main sequencer coming along, the... WMD - Metron, right? Did you order it already? Or did you already received it and haven't put a video about it here yet ;-) ?

Kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Gabor,

Oh yes! This is even better than your previous track and that was already a beautiful designed track. This track however is on a totally different scale, (much) better! The tension you got here in this track provides me goosebumps...

What can I say further? I just hope Covid-19 will be over soon and then I hope you can do a concert tour through Europe and don't forget to do a few performances in Germany ;-)

This is proper stuff, thank you very much for sharing this and kind regards, Garfield.

Yes, nice interesting jam indeed!

Hi Sacguy71,

Yes good point about the larger studio space, I am facing the same issue. I have the modular stuff just on the table next to my (home office) working table and there is just no more space for it to extend. For me there is no easy way around this and I need a mega plan to create space for a larger studio space... sigh... a lot of work ;-)

Good luck with your studio plans and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Sacguy71,

You make me curious about those Harvestman modules, I really need to check if I can test one or two of them with my next visit to my local dealer. It's just this stupid Covid-19 that keeps me away from doing that, let's hope that from next year onwards things are getting better on that front :-)

Kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Sacguy71,

Nice demo! Next time I go to my local dealer I need to check out the Harvestman stuff (I always forget that new name).

Indeed about the Varigate, I had it tested last year at my local dealer and wasn't really impressed, I am glad that I didn't bought it, after reading your feedback :-)

Thank you very much and kind regards, Garfield.

P.S.: I looked it up, Industrial Music Electronics... what a name ;-) To me the Harvestman sounds nicer and especially easier to remember!

Hi Igor,

Oh a nice and long track with experimental sounds you got there! I guess that fits well with Halloween ;-) Well you know the saying, better too late than not at all :-)

The sounds of some parts are going towards a kind of drone-sound and while you where absent here from this forum, did you heard about the new forum rule here yet? Any drone kind of track needs to be at least 17+ minutes ;-)

I guess you can get away with it because it's not a pure drone, anyway, I still like your track! :-)

Thank you very much for sharing this and kind regards, Garfield.

P.S.: That thingy about 17+ minutes for drone tracks is a kind of fun thing recently introduced so don't take that too serious ;-)

Hi Arrrrrr,

Welcome to modular synthesizers! :-)

Well... everything is possible, there are members here who take a rack and put them just full with only VCAs because the motto here on this forum is: "You never can have enough VCAs"... now that's kind a of a practical joke, so just ignore that ;-)

You can take a rack like your above rack or a rack with just 5 oscillators and nothing else, everything is possible...

The big question here is... does it make sense? On top of that you have to ask yourself, what do you want to do with that rack? If you like to share with us what you like to do with your rack (what are your expectations?), then it becomes significant easier to check if something makes sense :-)

Anyway, having all that said. Regarding your above rack, assuming you have nothing else, just planning for that above rack, my comments:

  • More than enough modulators for a relatively small rack, could consider perhaps a bit less
  • You could consider to get a bigger rack (one more row at least; for what you are all planning to do here)
  • Keep at least then one row of that bigger rack free for (near) future usage, don't buy everything in one go, start small, gain experience, adjust your planning/assumptions, buy a few more modules, gain more experience, etcetera
  • I do see enough "fancy looking modules" (some call them sexy looking modules ;-) ) so you might want to consider to start with a few less of those
  • And start with a few more classical components, for example:
  • You could do with at least one more "normal" oscillator to start with, that Snazzy FX thing, is most probably nice (I got the Kick_Me module, nice module!) but it's not a "normal" oscillator as such
  • Get also a more "normal" or more default filter, consider a WASP filter for example (Doepfer - A-124) or SEM filter (Doepfer - A-106-5) both good filters. If you want a bit more fancy stuff consider the Erica Synths - Black Dual VCF, though being a bit more fancy, still a bit of a classical filter too
  • I don't see any VCAs, right? (you need VCAs, that practical joke about you never can have enough VCAs still has to make a point)
  • Instead of that Erica Synths - Link, you might want to consider an audio interface module instead, depending on what exactly you are planning to do with it (some members here think/practice to live without an audio interface, that's up to them. I want to have a more worry-less-life and therefore I advocate to use an audio interface module; but at the end, it's totally up to you :-) )
  • Other than the Maths you might want to go for one classic ADSR; at least consider it

Well I guess for starters that should help already a bit. Keep an eye on the classic build up of a synthesizer and look less towards those fancy looking modules, then you should be fine.

Have fun, good luck and kind regards, Garfield.

Hey Gabor,

He, he, yeah nice heavy music :-) The music goes well with the video too. This is cool and great stuff!

You know the most amazing part of this? This girl, she's seriously amazing on that bar, she keeps going up and down, left and right, forwards and backwards, and jumping... how many hundreds of times in just these 5 minutes and you know what? She never drops! Big talent there! :-)

Thank you very much for sharing this and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Mowse,

Nice, long (but not long enough ;-) ) melody line, I love that. This could go on and on and on for me. It actually just made me "angry" that it stopped already after not even 5 minutes yet, so I just hit the play button again ;-)

Perhaps you should talk with Troux about those 17 minutes ;-) I hope next time you can make something at least beyond the 10 minutes, this music is crying loud for being played long!

Thank you very much for sharing this and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Mog00,

Thank you! Yes, having a dedicated reverb is nice indeed. Currently I am using an external reverb (Source Audio - Ventris Dual Reverb; lovely pedal), but I am also considering a reverb module, not sure yet which one though.

Kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Zuggamasta,

I am myself not so much (not at all ;-) ) into DIY of modules. I solder my own patch cables but that's about it.

However besides Befaco, manufacturers like Erica Synths, Bastl Instruments and Polaxis have DIY sets/kits. Naturally there are many more manufacturers, it's just that I don't have experience with them.

Have fun with the DIY part and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Mog00,

Now this is something! Thank you for the details on your track. How do you like your Pyramid sequencer? From the sound of the track, you must love it ;-)

Those drums that start to kick in around 1:30, yeah, good! And how subtle your main voice starts around 2:00, just lovely!

Oh come on! You keep coming with fantastic and beautiful sonic surprises during this track, this is seriously something else, but so nice, so subtle, and so good! Phew... getting emotional about it :-) Going to listen at it again!

Thank you very much for making my night very special! Kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Wishbonebrewery,

Oh yes, nice...! :-) And that drone sound that starts a bit before 4:30, oh.... so good... I love that! :-) You must have used a few "kilos" of reverb there ;-)

These kind of tracks can never be too long, can they? I enjoy the full length of it and I am glad Troux has such an influence on you ;-)

Nice beer label by the way, pity that I don't like beer, from the look of it I want it, it's just that I really don't like beer, I can't even swallow it down my throat, pity... The funny thing is, even though I don't like to drink beer, I am still quite intrigued by it.

By the way... are you making your music inside the brewery? If yes, you should be able to make your tracks beyond the 17 minute line ;-) Influenced by all those beer-damps and smells. No wonder that I felt being hyper spaced by your music :-)

Thank you very much and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Farkas,

Thank you very much and I wish you a happy Thanksgiving too!

I usually don't buy things just like that but indeed this week, online from my regular local dealer I managed to find a very nice offer on a module that wasn't really on my wish list but I felt attracted by the rather good discount as well as the module itself, being the Launch Codes from Antimatter Audio. Finally I manage to get an American module ;-) (other than the famous Make Noise and Intellijel). It was stock clearance though, my local dealer is no longer carrying this brand (at least it looks like that), so that's a bit of a pity; but I am glad to manage to get this module!

I didn't have time yet but I hope this weekend to play with it.

Enjoy modular and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Mowse,

Oh my God! This is seriously fantastic. I am having goosebumps while listening at this track. That riddle-high-tone sound that kicks in once and a while and later becomes the main "lead", beautiful done and then that drone sound first on the foreground and slowly moves to the background, that does it for me!

Just one thing... it isn't 17+ minutes ;-) And it should be in my opinion because you don't want to stop listening after not even 5 minutes of pure enjoyment, you want to continue this... forever...

I love this, thank you very much for sharing this and kind regards, Garfield.

Hi Sacguy71,

Thank you, happy Thanksgiving to you and everyone else too!

He, he, looks like your MDLR case is getting filled up nicely. Any idea already for which kind of 1U tiles you are going?

That sound around 4:30+, nice! He, he, at a certain stage that kick drum sounds like an angry neighbour hammering something at the wall facing your room. Was it really a kick drum or indeed your neighbour? ;-)

Ha, ha, at 6:15 you got Starwars at home! :-) And just a bit before 08:00 it sounds like you put a few alive (!) small ducks in a baking pan and try to bake them while they are complaining at you ;-) Lots of fun, I enjoyed your video!

Enjoy your new case and kind regards, Garfield.
